Stronger Muscles, Stronger Living: Why Weight Training Matters in Parkinson’s
Stronger Muscles, Stronger Living: Why Weight Training Matters in Parkinson’s
For many years, exercise has been recognised as one of the most powerful tools in managing Parkinson’s disease. But recent research highlights a type of exercise that deserves special attention: resistance (weight) training.
What the Science Says
Studies from the past few years show that weight training can:
- Build muscle strength to counteract the natural muscle loss of ageing and Parkinson’s.
- Improve balance and reduce falls risk by strengthening legs, hips, and core.
- Support mobility and posture, making everyday activities—like getting out of a chair or climbing stairs—easier.
- Enhance brain health, with some evidence linking resistance exercise to better cognitive function.
Importantly, newer guidelines suggest that lifting heavier weights for fewer repetitions may be more effective for strength gains than the old approach of light weights with lots of reps. Of course, safety and supervision are key—especially for people with Parkinson’s who may also have balance changes.
